Gear Diary: Hogue Knives and GoPro

I took a little hiatus over the holiday visiting my old stomping ground with the family.  Arizona was unusually cold while we were there, which figured since we were hoping to get a little sun (and warmth) after a rough start to the Winter here in Chicago.  I wanted to take the new Triple Aught Design Fastpack Litespeed as my go-to pack on the trip to further test its capabilities but I just couldn’t make it work.  I had to take too much gear with me on our two-week adventure and a smaller pack didn’t cut it.

I opted for the Vertx EDC Gamut and the extra organization and storage capacity made my life easier.  However, the Gamut didn’t completely fit under the seat in front of me on the plane so I was lucky my wife had booked me the exit row.

The Vertx EDC Gamut isn't as airplane friendly as other packs I have due to its length.

I received a GoPro 3+ Black Edition as a gift over Christmas.  This is my first experience with the GoPro so expect some posts on the subject going forward.  And of course, more video based reviews. 😉

I did a little gear research over the break and it led me to Hogue Knives.  Their collection of Allen Elishewitz designed folders and in particular the double hollow ground EX-04 model really caught my eye.  I have this beauty incoming.

My Kershaw blades have set the bar pretty high for production folders so we’ll see if the EX-04 measures up.

Is that the regular Gamut or the Gamut Plus? I am assuming it’s the former based on your review. I ordered a Plus and am now really concerned that it will be too big. I’ve had a Timbuk2 Command Laptop TSA-Friendly messenger bag for a number of years but want a backpack. I read some reviews that suggested the Gamut was a bit too small in the main compartment, so I got the larger size. I guess it may be going back :-(

Mark – it is indeed the regular Gamut, not the Gamut Plus. The Plus is two inches longer so it would extend even further out from underneath the seat. So, if your purchase is specifically geared towards air travel, you might need to go in another direction. In my opinion, the chatter about the regular Gamut’s main compartment being too small is overblown. I guess it depends on what you intend to carry, but I managed to fit my Nikon Coolpix L320, GoPro and Accessories in a Lowepro Dashpoint AVC 2 case, and my TAD Gear Stealth LT jacket in the main compartment during this last flight home. There were also items in every mesh pocket and in both water bottle pockets on the outside that stole capacity from the main. That’s not bad for a mid-sized pack.

Thanks for the additional perspective. I ordered a regular Gamut and will look at them side-by-side and send one back!
