The Tom Bihn Lower Modular Pocket is an accessory for the Smart Alec backpack. The pocket’s dimensions are 10.8″ x 6.7″ x 3″ / 275 x 170 x 75 mm and it adds 3+ liters of extra capacity to the 26 liter/1,600 cubic inch Smart Alec.
It attaches via Gatekeeper Clips securely to the Smart Alec’s lower accessory loops.
The inside of the Lower Pocket consists of a main compartment (basically a dump pouch), two O-rings from which additional accessories can be attached and a slip pocket.
What can the Lower Modular Pocket be used for? Like a little Sherpa on your back, it can be leveraged to carry loose items that you don’t want to root around for to access in the main compartment of the Smart Alec. Things that you take in and out of your pack often. For me, in the winter, that would include items like my hat, gloves, chapstick, and sunscreen.
I’ve also used the Lower Pocket with my Source Tactical Kangaroo Collapsible Canteen. Source is an Israeli company that makes excellent hydration systems used by military units around the world. The Kangaroo has a 1 Liter capacity and is an excellent alternative when you don’t want or need to haul a full sized reservoir.
The Kangaroo fits quite nicely in the Tom Bihn Lower Modular Pocket (even with the molle pouch although that’s a tighter squeeze), which frees up additional capacity in the Smart Alec’s main compartment for other gear.
The Tom Bihn Lower Modular pocket is a must have accessory for Smart Alec owners who need additional quick access storage for their load out. It retails for $40 and is available direct from Tom Bihn’s website.
